If you asked me what the best movie of 2021 is (so far) I would say, without a doubt, "Luca." The movie is set in an Italian seaside town called Portorosso. Luca and his friends, Alberto and Giulia (pronounced like Julia), are training for the Portorosso Cup. Alberto and Luca want to win the cup to buy a Vespa with the prize money and see the world together. But Luca and Alberto have a secret: they're sea monsters!

I first watched this movie a few months ago, and since then it's become part of my life. I've watched it more than ten times and can recite everyone's lines *almost* perfectly. I'm obsessed.

One of my favorite things about this movie is the graphics. Both the art and the animation are exquisite. The style that the characters are drawn in is refreshing, and the scenery is very realistic.

Gelato!

I also love the setting: a human town called Portorosso. I really like this town. There is no real Portorosso in Italy, but it was inspired by an area called Cinque Terre. Again, the graphics are beautiful in the setting. It's colorful and cheerful, and it makes you feel like you're actually there.

But what really makes Luca such an amazing movie is the characters. Luca is curious and somewhat timid; he's a bookworm and a dreamer. Alberto is enthusiastic and loud. He's more outgoing than Luca, always taking risks and trying new things. Giulia is spunky and upbeat, always looking for the positive. The three of them call themselves The Underdogs, because they're 'kids who are different', as Giulia says. Ercole is this movie's villain. All us Luca fans hate him. But we love to hate him.

Yet another thing I enjoy immensely about Luca is the music. The music has gone above and beyond what I've come to expect from a Pixar movie. The songs with lyrics are all in Italian, with Italian singers. The instrumentals, composed by Dan Romer, are so incredibly beautiful. My favorite instrumentals are 'Portorosso', 'You Forgot Your Harpoon', 'Not Our Kid', and 'Go Find Out For Me".

"It's a human thing. I'm kind of an expert."

Overall, Luca is a stunningly beautiful movie about friendship and acceptance, with glorious music and graphics and detailed and colorful characters too. It's a movie that the whole family will enjoy and remember.

Alberto (to Giulia): Could we turn the money into something? Something like -

Luca: That! *points to a shiny new yellow Vespa*

Giulia: Pfft, no. But it could get you that. *gestures to an old, beaten-up Vespa*

Luca: *gasp* It's beautiful

Alberto: YES WE NEED IT

♥ Bye! ♥
